Travelling with your pet

Many travelers prefer not to be without their pets while on vacation. In general, taking pets on flights is possible. However, requirements vary depending on the airline, the type of animal, and the destination. With proper preparation, you can help ensure that your pet travels safely and as comfortably as possible.

Pets travel on airplanes either in the cabin or in the cargo hold. Smaller animals are often allowed in the cabin, depending on their weight and the airline, provided they are in a suitable carrier. Larger animals are transported in a special crate in the cargo hold. Assistance dogs are generally permitted in the cabin regardless of their size or weight.

Before traveling, you should make sure to familiarize yourself with the regulations of your destination country. Depending on where you are going, there may be specific entry requirements, such as mandatory vaccinations, identification rules, or quarantine regulations. Since pets must remain in their travel crate during the flight, shorter flight times are often more comfortable for them.

For travel within the European Union, pets usually require an EU pet passport, issued by a veterinarian. This document records, among other things, vaccinations and owner information. It is also recommended to have your pet medically checked before the trip and, if necessary, to seek advice on travel preparations.

A suitable travel crate is especially important for the safe transport of your pet. In the cabin, flexible, well-ventilated carriers are usually used, while sturdy crates are required for the cargo hold. Make sure your pet has enough space to turn around and lie down comfortably. Exact requirements may vary depending on the airline.

Allow extra time for check-in when traveling with a pet. Animals traveling in the cabin go through security with you, while pets transported in the cargo hold are usually checked in at the oversized baggage counter. Please note that there are no opportunities to take your pet for a final walk in the airport security area.

Familiar scents can help your pet feel secure during the journey. Placing a worn piece of clothing or a familiar blanket in the travel crate can help reduce stress. It is also recommended to line the crate with absorbent material. Clearly labeling the crate with your contact information and destination can be very helpful as well.

The rules for traveling with pets vary between airlines. Some allow small animals in the cabin, while others transport pets only in the cargo hold—or may not offer the service at all. Weight limits and restrictions for certain species or breeds may also apply. Be sure to check the specific regulations of your airline before booking.
