TENERIFE
CANARY ISLANDS
SPAIN
Jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean and covering an area of 2,000km², Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. This multifaceted island attracts more than two million visitors every year, who come to relax and soak up a good dose of vitamin D. The contrast between the northern and southern parts of this Spanish island really showcases Tenerife’s diversity. While adventure junkies craving action are more drawn to the north, those holidaymakers seeking relaxation are more likely to be found in the south of the island.
Destination airport: Tenerife (TFS)
Tenerife is known for its very special black beaches composed of volcanic rock. Especially in the north of the island and near Puerto de la Cruz, many of the beaches seem so surreal as to almost defy imagination. For those who prefer their beaches white and sandy, we recommend the stretches of beach near the capital city, Santa Cruz.
The south of the island appeals with its many offers of touristic excursions. Families will enjoy the exhilarating water parks and amusement parks, which are mainly located near wide, sandy beaches and are easily reached by rental car for the perfect day trip. Other top tips for family-friendly excursions include the Tenerife Zoo Monkey Park, the Las Águilas Jungle Park or the Mariposario del Drago Butterfly Park.
Tenerife also has a lot to offer for nature lovers. The island is home to the most well-developed network of hiking trails in all the Canary Islands. For a unique activity, try climbing the Pico del Teide mountain, located in the national park bearing the same name. At 3,718 metres, this is the highest mountain in Spain. The volcanic landscape that reveals itself as you ascend is truly one-of-a-kind. Shaped under natural circumstances on the island, the beautiful and extraordinary flora and fauna here make this hike unforgettable.
Back near the coast, we recommend an evening stroll in one of the many small fishing villages or in the capital Santa Cruz. The city is characterised by its many green park landscapes and particularly hospitable locals. One fishing village that has already established itself as an excellent tourist destination is Puerto de Santiago in the southwest of Tenerife. Here you can round off the day with a nice glass of wine and delicious Spanish tapas in a restaurant at the harbour.
