Operations & Safety

Safety is a top priority at Münster/Osnabrück Airport. That is why several trades work hand in hand to ensure operational processes, compliance with official standards and a functioning infrastructure. The latter prompted FMO GmbH to completely renovate the existing 2,170-meter runway in 2022/23 and to finish it to the latest safety standards.

In general, modernization projects are constantly taking place at Münster/Osnabrück Airport to ensure that it will continue to play an important, modern role in the economic region of Münsterland, Osnabrücker Land and the Steinfurt district in the future. The focus is on making the airport climate-neutral by 2030. All information on the subject of carbon neutrality can be found here.

Ready for action 24/7 - The FMO Airport Fire Department

Among other things, our airport fire department ensures a high level of safety. A team of 63 firefighters (including part-time reinforcements) at Münster/Osnabrück Airport ensures that internationally defined emergency response standards can be met at all times and at all locations on the airport site. This includes arriving at an accident site within 180 seconds. A fleet of 15 vehicles enables the colleagues to act confidently and professionally.

Monitoring of the security areas

Another important point that ensures smooth airport operations is our security personnel. FMO Security Services GmbH (FSSG) ensures at the various passenger checkpoints, baggage controls and at all access points to the security area that no one is allowed access without first being checked. As a subsidiary of the FMO Group, FSSG stands for reliability and diligence in the officially supervised control of persons and baggage.

Security at a commercial airport of this category is supported by official supervision.

Air traffic control at FMO

Münster/Osnabrück Airport is an international commercial airport (IATA code FMO and ICAO code EDDG) and is subject to several official bodies that ensure safety on the ground as well as in the air. The DFS (Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH), which is based at FMO due to its categorization, guides aircraft across the tarmac for takeoff or landing. The air traffic controllers responsible there ensure orderly operations on the apron and in the airspace. They are in constant contact with the aircraft moving in the airspace around FMO, issue takeoff and landing permits and also exchange information with the airport staff on routing and flight plans.
